Scaling & Root Planing
When plaque is left on a tooth, it provides the perfect condition for bacteria to thrive. The bacteria then irritates the gums, causing them to bleed more easily. If you have ever noticed your gums bleed when you are brushing your teeth or eating you may be in the early stage of gum disease called gingivitis.
Gum disease can break down the bone structure of your teeth and eventually cause them to become loose. This becomes a problem when you don’t notice the symptoms until they become more severe. Unfortunately, this damage to the bone structure of your teeth is irreversible. However, if caught in time, Dr. Cannon can halt the progression of the disease with scaling and root planing. This eliminates the bacteria and provides the necessary conditions for healing to occur.
Scaling is the process of scraping off the tartar from above and below the gum line. Root planing gets rid of rough spots on the tooth root where the germs gather, and removes bacteria that contributes to gum disease. This procedure can result in less bleeding, swelling, and discomfort compared to traditional deep cleaning methods. This can be a great solution to getting back to a healthier smile!
